The future of aspiring doctors in Jammu and Kashmir hangs in the balance, and accusations are flying! The National Conference (NC) is pointing fingers directly at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), blaming them for jeopardizing the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Institute of Medical Excellence. This all stems from the National Medical Commission (NMC) retracting the Letter of Permission (LoP) for the institute's MBBS program. But here's where it gets controversial... Hindu groups had been protesting the program's admission policies, claiming they favored Muslim students.
NC chief spokesperson Tanvir Sadiq didn't mince words, stating that the BJP has "played with the future of aspiring doctors." He asserted that the people of Jammu, by and large, opposed these protests. He even brought Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti into the mix, accusing her of exploiting the situation for political gain. Sadiq argued that Mufti's actions had inadvertently strengthened the BJP's presence in Jammu and Kashmir, a presence he claims was virtually non-existent for decades prior.
Think about this: Because of this single action of the BJP, the educational futures of so many students are now at risk. And this is the part most people miss... Sadiq highlighted that while the initial enrollment included 40-45 Muslim students and 6-7 Hindu students, the institute had the potential to train thousands of doctors in the years to come. He emphasized the importance of youth empowerment, arguing that the BJP's actions were actively undermining the future prospects of young people in the region.
Referencing Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, Sadiq pointed out the unusual nature of the situation. Typically, protests are organized to demand educational institutions, not to shut them down. He framed this as a unique instance where a political party has seemingly taken steps to harm the future of its own constituents.
Sadiq then questioned the actions of BJP leaders Sunil Sharma (Leader of Opposition) and Sat Sharma (BJP Jammu and Kashmir president) for their meetings with senior leaders in Delhi regarding the issue. “I regret that in the name of religion, they played with the future of Jammu and Kashmir,” he said. He further questioned the logic of prioritizing religious identity over the need for doctors, especially considering the recent Covid-19 pandemic, asking, “During Covid-19, did anyone ask whether a doctor was Hindu or Muslim?”
He went on to reiterate his claim that the people of Jammu, including students, girls, and youth, were largely against the protests that led to the NMC's decision. Sadiq painted a picture of a small group of individuals who, in the name of religious struggle, had endangered the futures of many. He emphasized the universal desire among parents for a secure future for their children, a future that the National Conference aims to provide.
Now, let's delve into the timeline. The Medical Assessment and Rating Board of the NMC initially granted permission to the institute on September 8 of the previous year. However, things took a turn when admissions began for the first MBBS batch. The allotment of a majority of the 50 MBBS seats (42) to Muslim students sparked immediate objections from right-wing groups. These groups argued that the admissions were unfair and that they hurt Hindu sentiments, especially considering the institute's connection to the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board. The BJP then joined these protests.
Following the uproar, an inspection was conducted at the institute, and alleged discrepancies were found. This led to the NMC's withdrawal of the Letter of Permission. But is this the whole story?
