The struggle of parents with critically ill children is exacerbated by the ongoing shortage of essential medicines in government hospitals, according to a leading doctors' union. This crisis has led to a dire financial situation for families, who are now being forced to seek private solutions due to the unavailability of crucial medications. The President of the Doctors' Trade Union Alliance for Medical and Civil Rights, Dr. Chamal Sanjeewa, revealed that state hospitals, such as the Ridgeway Arya Children's Hospital, are unable to provide a consistent supply of essential drugs prescribed for young patients. As a result, parents are increasingly directed to purchase medicines from private pharmacies, with some families incurring monthly expenses of up to Rs. 30,000 for a single medication. One such medication, Ethosuximide, is commonly used to treat seizures in children, and its high cost in private pharmacies poses a significant challenge for low-income families, potentially disrupting treatment for their children. The shortages extend beyond Ethosuximide, affecting medicines provided through special pediatric clinics, which treat chronic childhood illnesses and kidney-related conditions. Dr. Sanjeewa emphasized the critical nature of these disruptions, warning that any interruption in these treatments could lead to severe health complications. He urged the government to take immediate action to ensure a continuous supply of essential medicines, emphasizing that children's lives should not be compromised due to procurement failures.
