Apple's latest displays are here, but not everyone is invited to the party. The new Studio Display and Studio Display XDR models are turning heads, but they're not compatible with Intel-based Macs. This might leave some users feeling left behind, especially those still rocking older Mac models.
But here's the catch: Apple's compatibility list for these displays is exclusively reserved for M-series chip-powered Macs. This means if you're holding onto a Mac with an Intel chip, you're out of luck with these new displays. The list of supported Macs includes:

- 14-inch MacBook Pro (2021 and later)
- 13-inch MacBook Pro (M1, 2020 and later)
- 15-inch MacBook Air (2023 and later)
- 13-inch MacBook Air (M1, 2020 and later)
- Mac Studio (2022 and later)
- Mac mini (2020 and later)
- Mac Pro (2023 and later)
- 24-inch iMac (2021 and later)
And this is where it gets interesting: Apple has been gradually phasing out Intel Macs since 2020, starting with the introduction of Apple silicon. The Intel-based MacBook Air and MacBook Pro lines were updated to Apple chips in 2020 and 2021, respectively, and the Intel Mac Pro was the last of its kind, discontinued in 2023. It's been almost three years since Apple bid farewell to Intel chips.
As Intel Macs become a distant memory, Apple is also phasing out software support. macOS Tahoe will be the final software update for these machines, and Intel Macs won't receive macOS 27. However, Apple isn't leaving Intel Mac users completely in the dark; they plan to provide security updates for three more years.
So, what's the verdict? The new Studio Displays are a tempting upgrade, but they're not for everyone. If you're still on the Intel Mac train, you might need to consider other display options or even a Mac upgrade.
