The sting of repeated defeat, amplified by a hot mic! It seems the intense rivalry between Matthew Tkachuk and Leon Draisaitl has taken a verbal turn, with Tkachuk delivering a pointed jab that echoes their recent Stanley Cup Final encounters.
Leon Draisaitl is undeniably one of the top four or five hockey players globally. Matthew Tkachuk, however, has mastered the art of leveraging every possible advantage against his formidable opponents, and that includes employing a sharp tongue.
For the past two NHL seasons, Tkachuk's Florida Panthers have emerged victorious over Draisaitl's Edmonton Oilers in the ultimate showdown: the Stanley Cup Final. During Sunday night's group-stage finale in Milan, with the United States holding a lead over Germany in the second period, the broadcast captured a candid moment. As the players skated near the benches at the Milano Santagiulia Ice Hockey Arena, Tkachuk couldn't resist a reminder to his rival.
"Always the bridesmaid, never the bride, eh, Leon?" Tkachuk was heard saying, a clear reference to Draisaitl's team consistently falling short in the final.
When questioned about the remark after the Americans' decisive 5-1 win, Tkachuk played it cool. "It's always a challenge," he stated, acknowledging the history between their teams and expressing that playing Draisaitl is "always fun."
Tkachuk, alongside his linemates Brady Tkachuk and Jack Eichel, was frequently matched against Draisaitl's line throughout the game. Matthew Tkachuk contributed two assists to the victory, while Draisaitl was unable to register any points.
Tkachuk, whose on-ice intensity is often matched by his outspoken nature, downplayed the significance of the hot-mic incident, suggesting it wasn't entirely typical of their rivalry. "I wouldn't say so," he commented. "Some guys, you've got to play harder than most physically, and maybe after the whistle sometimes, too. I thought our line, I thought (Eichel) especially did an unbelievable job of giving him and their line nothing tonight. Sometimes you've got to play both parts of the game. I thought mainly (Eichel) did a great job, (between) the whistles, of playing him hard."
And what about the moments after the whistles? Well, that's a Tkachuk brothers' specialty, isn't it?
