Lord of the Rings Reunion! Gandalf and Frodo Return for New Movie (2026)

A significant reunion is set to take place in the upcoming film, The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, and it's bound to excite fans of the franchise! This much-anticipated movie is being helmed by Andy Serkis, who will reprise his iconic role as Gollum. Adding to the excitement, Ian McKellen has confirmed that he will return as the beloved wizard Gandalf.

In a recent statement, McKellen revealed not only his involvement but also teased an emotional reconnection with Frodo Baggins within the film. The project is slated to hit theaters on December 17, 2027, and filming is set to commence in May. Here's what McKellen shared about the film's direction and cast:

"It's going to start filming in May. It's going to be directed by Gollum, and it's all about Gollum. But I'll tell you two secrets about the casting. There's a character in the movie called Frodo and another character called Gandalf, and apart from that, my lips are sealed."

While McKellen didn't explicitly state whether Elijah Wood would reprise his role as Frodo, it seems quite probable. After all, both Gollum and Gandalf will be portrayed by the same actors who brought these characters to life in the previous Lord of the Rings films. In fact, Wood expressed openness to returning to Middle-earth in a 2024 interview, stating how incredible it would be to reconnect with the cast and revisit such a cherished world. He remarked, "It would be pretty incredible. I have to say, any return to New Zealand to work with those individuals within the context of that world would be…jumping back into a world that’s so beloved and means so much to me. So yeah, it would be awesome."

The storyline of The Hunt for Gollum allows for this Gandalf and Frodo reunion, as it is positioned within the timeline after Bilbo Baggins' 111th birthday, depicted in The Fellowship of the Ring, yet before Frodo embarks on his perilous journey to Mordor. At this juncture, Gandalf and Frodo have already established a long-standing friendship.

It's worth noting that Frodo might not have a substantial amount of screen time, as the narrative primarily centers around Gandalf and Aragorn's quest to locate Gollum and gather crucial information about the One Ring. With Aragorn playing a pivotal role in the plot, there's a strong possibility that Viggo Mortensen will reprise his beloved character once more.

The return of Frodo also opens up the exciting opportunity for other hobbits to make cameo appearances in scenes set in the Shire. This could include fan-favorites like Samwise Gamgee (played by Sean Astin), Pippin Took (Billy Boyd), and Merry Brandybuck (Dominic Monaghan). It’s well-known that Wood, Astin, Boyd, and Monaghan have maintained a close friendship over the years, often reuniting, which raises hopes for their continued collaboration in this new live-action venture.

As Andy Serkis takes the director's chair for The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, Peter Jackson remains involved as a producer, similar to his role with the franchise's recent anime film, The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim. Notably, Jackson's frequent collaborators, Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, are also contributing their talents to the writing and production of this film.
