Fire Evacuates Katy Mills Mall Shoppers, Closes Food Court
A sudden fire at the Katy Mills Mall during a bustling shopping day caused a swift evacuation, leaving the food court temporarily closed. The incident unfolded around 2:20 p.m. in the food court, according to the City of Katy's Office of Emergency Management. Shoppers reported hearing fire alarms and being guided out of the mall, with some expressing confusion due to the lack of clear instructions.
Laura Bolding, a witness, recounted her experience, stating, 'We were shopping and then all of a sudden the fire alarm went off, and we’re like, ‘Okay, what do we do,’ No one was telling us what to do.' Despite not witnessing smoke or flames, Bolding noticed the arrival of multiple fire trucks and emergency personnel, including men in suits and a fire hose inside the mall. She observed firefighters climbing a ladder to the roof, signaling the end of their stay.
The fire was extinguished by 3:40 p.m., and the mall was reopened to the public. However, Door 2, the food court, and some businesses in the affected area remain closed as of the latest update. This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of preparedness and clear communication during emergency situations, especially in crowded public spaces.
