Breaking News: Former England U20 rugby star Joel Kpoku has unexpectedly parted ways with his French club, Section Paloise, mid-season, leaving fans and analysts alike stunned. This abrupt departure, a year and a half before his contract was set to expire in 2027, raises questions about the circumstances surrounding his decision.
Pau officially announced on Friday that Kpoku, a former star of Saracens, had requested an immediate release from his contract. The club, despite having a considerable amount of time remaining on the agreement, granted his request.
Pau's statement expressed gratitude for Kpoku's contributions during his 18-month tenure and wished him well for his future endeavors.
Kpoku, a towering 6'5", 126kg lock, arrived at Pau with high expectations, having signed a three-year deal. However, he has reportedly been unhappy at La Section. This season, he only played in a mere five games, with only two as a starter.
Born in Newham, Kpoku is now free to pursue other opportunities.
The 26-year-old, elder brother of Junior Kpoku, was once considered one of the most promising young locks in the Gallagher Premiership. His career took an interesting turn when he moved to France in the winter of 2021, leaving Saracens for Lyon.
"Various things happened away from the field," Kpoku shared in 2024. "I won’t go into too much detail with that, but what got me over the line was the fact that the old coach of Lyon, Pierre Mignoni, who brought me across, was interested for quite some time."
Kpoku added, "What made my decision a lot easier was the fact that I speak French, I’m a fluent French speaker. I don’t think I would have taken the opportunity if I wasn’t French-speaking. That made my decision easier and then having various conversations with my family and friends saying you might as well leap into the unknown, go there and see what it is about."
"Thankfully in that first year, I managed to break through, managed to win a Challenge Cup. It restarted my career because I didn’t really have that much game time at Saracens because I was coming off the back of being injured."
His twin brother, Jonathan, plays for Albi in the Nationale. Meanwhile, younger brother Junior is reportedly making a mid-season switch to Toulon, coached by Joel’s former Lyon mentor Mignoni. Could Joel follow Junior to RCT, or might he be tempted by a return to the Gallagher Premiership?
