A Call to Action: Youth Mobilized Against Rising HIV Infections
Makueni County, Kenya, joined the global effort to raise awareness on World AIDS Day, focusing on the critical issue of adolescents and young people being disproportionately affected by HIV.
The 2024 HIV report reveals a concerning trend: young adults and teens account for a staggering 39% of new infections, making them one of the most vulnerable groups. This alarming statistic underscores the urgent need for targeted interventions.
During the county's commemorative event, Deputy Governor Lucy Mulili emphasized the importance of youth engagement and called for a transformative approach to healthcare.
"We strive to create an environment where young people feel comfortable accessing health services," she stated. "These services must be free from stigma and judgment, ensuring that no child is born with HIV."
Mulili highlighted the availability of effective prevention methods, urging men to take the initiative and get tested as part of a comprehensive strategy to combat HIV transmission.
The county's health authorities are taking proactive steps. Health Chief Officer Harvey Mulei announced plans to integrate HIV services into existing healthcare platforms, aiming to reduce stigma and encourage early detection and treatment.
Health CECM Joyce Mutua addressed the Triple Threat, a multifaceted challenge encompassing HIV, sexually transmitted infections, and unintended pregnancy. She emphasized the need for young people to take charge of their health, advocating for abstinence and other preventive measures.
Mutua also raised concerns about adolescent pregnancy, a growing issue that poses significant health risks. She stressed the importance of addressing this problem to protect young individuals from potential harm.
