The Australian Open is set to welcome back some familiar faces as former champions and fan favorites aim to reclaim their glory! But this time, the road to the main draw is paved with challenges and surprises.
The 2026 Australian Open qualifying event promises to be a thrilling affair, with Sloane Stephens and Jennifer Brady, both former major semifinalists, making their return. Stephens, the 2017 US Open champion, has been out of action for seven months due to a foot injury, and her last win dates back to Wimbledon 2024. Brady, the 2021 Australian Open finalist, also faced setbacks after knee surgery in 2024, keeping her away from the courts since Beijing 2023. And they're not alone in their quest for a comeback.
The qualifying list includes two more former major semifinalists: Anastasija Sevastova (2018 US Open) and Tamara Zidansek (2021 Roland Garros). But here's where it gets interesting: eight players, including Stephens and Brady, have entered using a special ranking, which adds an intriguing twist to the competition.
Among them are Madison Brengle, Bai Zhuoxuan, Fiona Ferro, Kristina Mladenovic, Alice Tubello, Sachia Vickery, and the young Lilli Tagger, who stunned the tennis world by reaching the Jiujiang final on her tour-level debut in October. These players will be eager to make their mark and defy expectations.
However, the road to the main draw is far from easy. The initial list, based on the PIF WTA Rankings, includes 19 players ranked between No. 104 and No. 233, with only 101 of the top 103 having entered. Six of the absentees have already been granted main-draw wild cards, including Priscilla Hon, Tiantsoa Rakotomanga Rajaonah, and Talia Gibson.
But the story doesn't end there. The qualifying wild cards have been awarded, with eight going to Australian players, including Destanee Aiava and Lizette Cabrera, and one to France's Ksenia Efremova, a 16-year-old junior sensation. And with 15 alternates ready to step in, the competition is bound to be fierce.
As the tennis world eagerly awaits the start of the qualifying event on January 12th at Melbourne Park, one can't help but wonder: who will rise to the challenge and secure their spot in the main draw? And will the comeback queens reclaim their throne? The stage is set for an unforgettable journey.
