COUNSELOR/THERAPISTS/LICENSED MENTAL HEALTH
PROFESSIONALS
(FULL & PART-TIME)


Provide counseling, psychotherapy, and/or case management in a variety of settings (residential, nonresidential, clinic) and to a variety of client populations including (at risk youth and families, juvenile delinquents, mentally ill adults and youth, substance abusers). Most clinical services are provided from a cognitive and behavioral perspective and often require the use of non-traditional, assertive, and systems oriented work. Some positions require specialized training, licensure, and/or experience, e.g., in drug and alcohol treatment settings. The work typically requires some availability for evenings and/or weekend times as well as daytime availability. Clinicians are utilized in GUIDE projects located throughout the Washington/Baltimore metropolitan region. The positions most typically require a Master's degree and licensure as a mental health practitioner (LGSW, LGPC, LCSW-C, LCPC). Compensation may be by the hour or by salary and is competitive based on experience and previous training. Prior and existing vendorship status with managed care organizations and the Maryland Health Choice program is a plus.

Residential Coordinator (FULL-TIME)
 

Qualifications: The Residential Coordinator must have a Bachelor’s degree from a recognized and accredited college or university and at least three years of experience as a Residential Specialist, or in a related psychiatric rehabilitation position.  He/she must also possess at least one year of supervisory experience; have experience in and knowledge of medication monitoring. This individual must have a valid Maryland driver’s license and a driving record acceptable to GUIDE at the agency’s sole discretion. 

 

The Residential Coordinator reports directly to the Program Director.

 

Duties: The Residential Coordinator of the Independence Program in Montgomery County will be responsible for the day-to-day residential staff supervision and monitoring, and direct services to the consumers. The Residential Coordinator will be responsible for conducting his/her job in conformity with the Policies and Procedures of  the GUIDE Independence Program, as well as all relevant state and county regulations, and recognized professional ethical standards.

 

Specific duties shall include, but are not limited to: 

  • Overseeing residential staffing and personnel issues.  Primarily responsible for interviewing, hiring and firing, and processing of payroll and other personnel paperwork for all Residential Staff. 

  • Ensuring ongoing compliance of staff with COMAR regulations and GUIDE policies and procedures. Ensuring that consumers’ rights are protected at all times. 

  • Overseeing residential and rehabilitation staff orientation training and documentation of staff members’ competition of training requirements in accordance with relevant COMAR regulations; reviewing staff personnel files to ensure all necessary information is included. 

  • Conducting regular evaluations of staff performance at intervals

  • Conducting (with Program Director) regular bi-weekly staff meetings to address issues pertaining to consumers and/or the Program.  Recording minutes of all staff meetings; leading discussions of topics pertaining to residences and neighborhood issues. 

  • Administering all Program petty cash funds and required petty cash reporting. 

  • Reconciling utility and telephone bills for residential units and for the Independence Office as necessary. 

  • Monitoring maintenance of GUIDE vehicles and documentation of mileage; assuring that all vehicles are in working order and have sufficient fuel at all times; and monitoring completion of weekly AVan Maintenance Inspection Sheet

  • Supervising the implementation of all scheduled activities and individual client appointments; arranging transportation for consumers, as needed.

  • Overseeing residential staff members’ completion of documentation, e.g., Contact Notes, Daily Log entrees, Verification of Service Forms, Visitation Log, AA/NA attendance records, etc.  

  • Reviewing contact notes for accuracy and compliance to Medical Assistance and COMAR regulations;  reviewing entries marked as billable to ensure all elements necessary to comply with billing requirements are included; tallying of all contact hours and submitting these tallies to the Billing Coordinator. 

  • Disbursing residents’ weekly food allowance and maintaining food allowance tracking sheets. 

  • Collecting and verifying time sheets for all residential staff; completing and submitting Payroll Transmittal Sheets and time sheets to the Business Office for all residential and rehabilitation staff. 

  • Purchasing and/or ordering supplies for staff office. 

  • Purchasing supplies for residents, as needed; overseeing the purchase of appliances and other equipment type furnishings for the homes and maintaining all point of sale purchases and warranties for all appliances and furnishings. 

  • Monitoring the apartments for cleanliness, maintenance needs, safety, and furnishings and reporting necessary issues to the Program Director. 

  • Overseeing the residential needs of all Program consumers, ensuring that all residents live in a supportive environment in which they can learn the skills, they need to function independently; meeting with consumers individually or in groups to address residential concerns. 

  • Counseling and otherwise assisting residents with challenges of daily living. 

  • Representing the Program to outside agencies, including Core Service Agencies. 

  • Attending meetings or trainings, as necessary. 

  • Coordinating the completion of all fire drills. 

  • Ensuring that all random drug screenings are completed. 

  • Collecting and tallying end of the month site report. 

  • Carrying a pager or cell phone at all times, responding to pages from staff, instructing staff as to how to respond to the situation at hand, or contacting the Second On-Call as necessary, according to the protocol outlined in the Policy and Procedures Manual. 

  • Driving as necessary to complete duties of Residential Coordinator 

  • Other duties as assigned.

  • The position requires a criminal justice background record check supported by required fingerprinting that will be conducted through the State of Maryland Criminal Justice Information System (CJIS) and the FBI.

RESIDENTIAL SPECIALIST - TGH 
(F/T) Residential Counselor position available in a Therapeutic Group Home in Ft. Washington, Prince George's County, Maryland.  Make a difference in the lives of six teen-aged boys.  Provide supervision, guidance, and training in the skills of daily living.  Help to foster a nurturing, therapeutic milieu in which positive changes can take place in the lives of young men.  GUIDE Therapeutic Group Home is an intensive, structured program providing 24-hour supervision, intensive clinical services, recreation and leisure activities, and opportunities for community service.  Candidates for the position must have experience working with adolescents with emotional and behavioral disorders. Provide direct services to mentally ill adults or transitional age (18 to 24 years) youth, typically in residential settings including group homes and independent living apartments. Duties involve providing psychiatric rehabilitation services; medication monitoring; support to daily living activities; assistance in transportation; and assisting in recreational and cultural activities. Maturity and an enjoyment in working with adult consumers of the public mental health system is a requirement. Available shifts may include evening, overnight, daytime or weekend shifts. Residential Specialists are utilized in programs located in Prince George's and Montgomery Counties as well as Baltimore City. The position typically requires a Bachelor's degree or equivalent. Compensation may be by the hour or in some instances by salary and is competitive based on experience and previous training.

Volunteer Maryland Coordinator at the GUIDE Program (FULL-TIME)
 

PURPOSE AND SCOPE:

The Volunteer Maryland Coordinator (VMC) will work with the GUIDE Program to recruit and manage volunteers to tutor individuals in the Therapeutic Group Homes (TGH) and the Transitional Age Youth Program (TAY), while also recruiting volunteers that will help facilitate leisure and cultural activities across programs.  The VMC will also work to recruit volunteers who will assist GUIDE Independence Consumers with nutritional education and guidance.  In all the VMC will work to recruit 28 volunteers who will commit to 2 hrs of volunteering a week.  The goal is to have volunteers serve 56 hours of volunteering per week.

 

This is an 11 month, full-time (40 hours/week) position as a member of the Volunteer Maryland (VM) AmeriCorps program serving at The GUIDE Program.  Volunteer Maryland Coordinators (VMCs) are responsible for developing and implementing a volunteer program as agreed to in the VM site partnership negotiations that occurred in spring, 2010.  The VMC service year will begin on September 15, 2010 and conclude on August 2, 2011.

 

BENEFITS

Full-time VMCs receive a living stipend of $13,000, an education award of $5,350, and health insurance if they are not already covered.  They may also qualify for a child care allowance.  Other benefits include student loan deferment, professional training, valuable networking opportunities, working with a dedicated team of AmeriCorps members and staff, and making a real difference in a local community.  

 

DUTIES:

  • Develop a written work plan and timeline for implementation.

  • Revise or update as needed program materials such as a policy and procedure manual, volunteer position descriptions, promotional fliers or brochures, and screening, training, and evaluation tools.  

  • Recruit volunteers.  Outreach methods may include:  presentations to faith, business, and/or community groups; staffing information booths at community events; and utilizing the media.  

  • Screen volunteers as necessary; procedures might include interviews, reference checks, and criminal background checks.

  • Develop and facilitate orientation and training for volunteers.

  • Supervise volunteers; develop and implement recognition activities for volunteers such as special events, awards, gifts, etc.

  • Maintain accurate records of volunteer participation.  

  • Evaluate progress made in achieving the program’s goals; report on progress in statistical and narrative reports for Volunteer Maryland.

  • Develop community partnerships to support the volunteer program.

  • Perform direct community service each week (up to four hours each week).

  • Serve as public ambassador for the Service Site, Volunteer Maryland, and AmeriCorps.

  • Participate in VM and AmeriCorps training, service projects, and other activities

  • VMCs may be assigned other volunteer program duties during the course of the service year by the Service Site Supervisor.

 

SELECTION PROCESS

To participate in Volunteer Maryland, applicants must submit a written application.  Staff will review the application, with special emphasis placed on the writing sample, invite the applicant to interview if appropriate, conduct two reference checks, and complete a criminal background investigation.  The candidate will also go through any screenings required by the GUIDE Program. 

 

ENROLLMENT REQUIREMENTS

To serve in AmeriCorps, VMCs must be at least 17 years of age; have a high school diploma or GED; and be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident alien.  Documentation of age, education, and citizenship are due on the first day of the service year.

 

SKILLS AND ATTITUDES NECESSARY:

  • Skilled at taking initiative, problem solving, and working independently, to be able to develop and implement a volunteer program.

  • Sensitivity for individuals sealing with intellectual and emotional disabilities.

  • Skilled at building interpersonal relationships, to work effectively as part of a team (at the Service Site and with his/her class of VMCs), and to manage volunteers.

  • Strong verbal skills, to communicate effectively with staff, volunteers, and community groups.

  • Skilled at written communication, to develop program materials and reports.

  • Committed to the concept of national service and to making a difference in his/her community.

  • Basic computer literacy, to be able to produce program materials and track volunteer hours.

  • Have own, or have access to, transportation to and from VM trainings, events, and Service Site-related activities.

  • Able to respond to organizational change productively and maintain positive attitude.   

 ORIENTATION AND TRAINING

Volunteer Maryland provides approximately 20 days of training in program development, volunteer management, marketing, communication, and leadership skills.  Training is held the first two weeks of the service year, with monthly training days throughout the rest of the year.  Additional training opportunities are also available through AmeriCorps and the Service Site.  The Site Supervisor provides orientation to the VM Coordinator’s local placement site.

 

SUPERVISION AND EVALUATION

The Service Site Supervisor provides day-to-day supervision.  The Site Supervisor will evaluate performance in accordance with the agency’s policies.  In addition, Volunteer Maryland’s Director provides overall supervision to all VM Coordinators, and evaluates performance at mid-year and at the end of the year.

 

HOURS

Full-time AmeriCorps members are required to serve approximately 40 hours each week.  At the GUIDE Program , the office hours will be 9:00 am -5:30 pm, Monday - Friday; evening and weekend work will be required from time to time.  Volunteer Maryland training days are 10:00 am – 4:00 pm.
